I review books, not music.
But I have a very musical husband who serves on the worship team for our church plant. Because of that, he’s usually got a killer playlist – that I steal occasionally. Okay… quite frequently. So, I’d thought I’d share some of my newest acquisitions a la hubsters.
Here are 4 albums that have helped me shake those post-Christmas, gray-day blues and kick start my worship of the King. I hope they help sweeten your walk with Christ this year, too!
FUTURE OF FORESTRY – The Complete Travel Series
Why I like it: Amazing. Cool. California. I don’t love every track, but the ones I do are stuck in my head for days. In ‘Closer to Me,’ I hear influences of artists like Jeff Buckley and Rufus Wainwright. But my favorites are ‘Close Your Eyes‘ and ‘Slow Your Breath Down‘ – they are brilliant.
You might like this album if you like: Phil Wickham, Coldplay, Keane, or the Shins.
JOSH GARRELS – Love & War & The Sea In Between
Why I like it: Unusual vocals that are musical and worshipful without being cliche. Check out track ‘Bread & Wine‘ and ‘White Owl.’ I’m not even sure how to categorize this album – so I’m putting it in the category of awesome.
You might like this album if you like: awesome stuff
ALL SONS & DAUGHTERS – Season One
Why I like it: Haunting melodies, raw lyrics, & deep instrumentals. Even though this isn’t their newest album, Season One is my favorite. The worship songs are incredibly well written, inspiring and insanely singable (not a real word, I know). Every track is amazing, but if I was forced to listen to one song for three days without interruption it would be ‘I Am Set Free.’ If you could only buy one album on this list, you should buy this one. Now.
You might like this album if you like: Folksy Americana with a modern twist. To sing in the shower. Or your car.
AUDREY ASSAD – The House You’re Building
Why I like it: Lovely melodies and soulful resonance. Plus, she’s cute as a button. ‘The House You’re Building’ isn’t her latest album, but I love it nonetheless. I typically play this when I’m hosting a women’s event in my home.
You might like this album if you like: Sarah Bareilles or any female singer/songwriter type.
Hope this helps you update your playlist for the New Year and usher you into the presence of our Loving King!

I love listening to Annie Moses Band. If you aren’t familiar, they are four (sometimes five), extremely talented, homeschooled siblings who, as young adults, sound perfectly together (nothing compares to sibling harmony as far as I’m concerned). Their sound is folksy-bluegrass and their lyrics pure and true (and mostly written by members of this family).
If singable isn’t a word, it absolutely should be. 🙂
I can’t wait to sample these! My new favorite I found at the end of last year was the Rend Collective Experiment. It’s a great mix of upbeat folksy praise and slow soulful songs you can sing your heart out to. As an added bonus my kids also enjoy jammin out to their upbeat tunes so we’ve had frequent inpromptu dance parties at the Koval’s when we spin their tracks.
Ooh, I’m excited to get some new music! Going to add them to my Spotify lists. Thanks!!
Josh Garrels puts out 100% of his music through fan support dollars. Unusual and refreshing. If you want more of my music, help me pay for it. I like it!
