About the book
Sweeter than Honey: Cultivating an Appetite for the Word of God is a five-week discipleship book on how to study God’s Word, but most importantly, it is meant to be used as a guide to help women teach other women how to feast on the Scriptures.
Part 1 helps you cultivate your appetite for God’s Word, outlining from Psalm 19 the many reasons why God’s Word truly is sweeter than honey and what makes it a trustworthy source on which woman may build their lives.
In chapters 1 and 2, you’ll take a spiritual taste test to evaluate how God’s Word truly tastes to you, learn to combat several cultural stingers regarding the trustworthiness of God’s Word, and discover insight from Psalm 19 on “bee-coming” a woman of the Word – a woman who, after tasting the sweetness of her Savior, makes room in her heart for the Spirit to grow true joy, especially when she comes to those parts of her spiritual meal that appear bitter at first.
Part 2 outlines a practical and easy three-step method for feasting on God’s Word adapted from beloved Bible study teacher Howard Hendricks. This method is for any believer, regardless of a Bible knowledge or background. Inside, I include simple steps for self-feeding on the Scriptures, adding layers to this strategy as you grow in your Bible knowledge, and how to avoid the most common Bible study mistakes in interpreting and applying God’s Word to your life.
Why read this book?
More and more, women are entering the doors of our churches or attending our women’s ministry events lacking both a biblical worldview and a biblical background (often through no fault of their own). Many are starving for the meat of the gospel, yet know not how to prepare a meal for themselves – much less for others. And instead of giving them hands-on cooking lessons that start with the basics, we’ve become accustomed to handing out ready-to-eat dinners in prepackaged containers (think video-driven Bible studies). Ask any busy woman, microwavable meals on takeout trays pale in comparison to hot, home-cooked meals enjoyed around a table bursting with friends and family.
Sweeter than Honey is a hands-on “cooking” lesson for women of any age, season of life, or level of Bible knowledge
You will enjoy this study if you’re tired of reading books about the Bible instead of studying the Bible itself or simply if you long to get more out of your personal devotions but don’t know where to start.
You will not enjoy this study if you’re looking for a quick emotional “pick-me-up” or if you’re looking for a book on Bible journaling. On my Instagram feed, I post my daily devotions and am often messaged with questions about how I draw or letter in my notes. Sweeter than Honey is not an art book, mainly because I am not an artist. While I love and commend fellow artists for their gift to letter the Scriptures, that part of worship is not the aim of this book. This is a book about studying the content of the Scriptures so we might dwell richly in the presence of Christ.
But I can and will make this promise to you. If you commit to studying the inspired Word of God, you will come away forever changed. The more you seek Christ in his Word, the more you will crave him, and the more you will be transformed to live and look like him.
How to buy the book

For New Bible Students
Dear new student of the Bible, you are capable of reading God’s Word and, with his Spirit’s help, understanding and responding to its timeless truths!
You simply need the commitment to sit down with Christ at his table each day and an open heart and mind to try some of the new dishes he has provided. Find a friend to bring with you to the feast and you can hold each other accountable as you dig into God’s Word together. I encourage you to open his Book without fear, but rather, with a spirit of excitement to see what he reveals to you about himself. I promise that once you’ve tasted of our Savior’s sweetness, you will be forever changed!
For New Bible Teachers
This book was written for you, too – for the mature believer who has opportunities to disciple the women around her but doesn’t know where to begin!
Inside you won’t find a guide on parsing Greek verbs or step-by-step instructions on in-depth word studies. Important as those things are, your disciple likely cannot digest those foods, yet. Your first challenge in teaching women to grow their appetite for God’s Word will be to instill in them their need for its daily nourishment despite busy schedules and comprehension level.
The first two chapters of the book outline why learning to self-feed on God’s Word is crucial to a woman’s Christian walk. The final three chapters outline the basics of Bible study in an easy-to-use three-step method. Each chapter contains a “Feast with Me” section written specifically for leaders and teachers offering simple ideas for helping your disciples learn how to view and handle God’s Word.
Finally, the book culminates with a 31-day Bible reading challenge you can undertake with your disciple to encourage her to put her new study techniques into practice.
For both student and teacher, I offer several free downloads.
The free PDF leader’s guide contains answers and aids for many of the discussion questions at the end of each chapter.
The “Bee Truthful” questionnaire (click for color or grayscale) will help you gauge how well and often the women in your group study God’s Word. Print and distribute these cards on the first day of your study and ask them to fill them out anonymously. Never assume your ladies are reading and understanding the Scriptures or that you know the reasons they are or are not.
The Bible study worksheet template can be used for any passage in the Bible and provides space and key prompts for working through each of the three components of the observation-interpretation-application method. I usually print off about 25 copies of the worksheet at a time and put them in a three-ring binder so they are ready to be used when I wake up. This template is perfect for taking the 31-day Bible reading challenge that concludes the book.
Elsewhere on the site I’ve posted ideas for hosting this material as part of your next women’s event. Both the brevity of the book and the hands-on learning opportunities are easily tailored to use for a women’s weekend retreat or training event.
Above all, I hope this book helps you encourage and equip the women around you to feast on God’s Word each day and invite others to his lavish table.
