Hi! Welcome to Hive Resources! This September, I’m releasing my first e-Bible study – Daughters of the King: Finding Your Place in the Biblical Story. So while I’m busy crossing T’s and dotting I’s for the big reveal next month, I hope you’ll enter to win one of my favorite reads from this summer. I’ve had so much fun sharing my bookshelf with you, and I can’t wait to share my own book! Be sure to subscribe because starting next week I’ve got some fun details coming your way!
Bittersweet by Shauna Niequist
Last spring I reviewed Shauna Niequist’s latest book, Bread & Wine: A Love Letter To Life Around the Table here on Hives. It was the first book I’d read by the author and I immediately fell in love with her warm and honest writing style. So, this summer, I snuggled up with her book, Bittersweet: Thoughts on Change, Grace, and Learning the Hard Way (because that’s what you do with Shauna’s books. They invite you to curl up in your reading chair, laugh, cry, and eat…a lot.)
A collection of short reflections, Bittersweet is the story of how God helps us find joy in unexpected places, and how we often sweep them under the rug instead of seeing them in the light he intended. Life is, in a word, bittersweet.
What I like about the book:
Shauna writes outside the lines. Because my bookshelves are mostly crammed with biblical theology books and commentaries, her words are often a blast of fresh air to me. For the most part, I’m accustomed to reading books written by middle-aged white guys who are, most often, dead. So, Shauna’s books shake me up and me spit out like a carnival fun ride -the kind of ride you immediately want to ride for a second time when it’s over.
Shauna emphasizes God’s bittersweet sovereignty as he uses little and sometimes painful things to help us find joy. She dares the reader to look for joy in the unexpected places of huge life changes such as job loss, miscarriage, family movies, career transitions, and more.
