This month, The Book Club at Desiring Virtue is reading Fierce Women: The Power of a Soft Warrior by Kimberly Wagner.
Primarily, Fierce Women is a book on marriage – following the story of the Wagner’s marriage and what it means to be a “godly wife” without being a “mousy doormat” or needing a “personality transplant.” The book description says: “No matter whether you’re an extrovert or more introverted-Kimberly Wagner believes women are created to be a compelling force.”
In a market flooded with books on Christian marriage, here’s why Jessalyn picked it:
“I am not by nature a ‘quiet’ woman. My personality is definitely “strong” and my husband (my most intimate of friends) is both encouraged and harmed by that strong personality more than anyone else. As I listened to Mrs. Wagner’s testimony, I was struck by how much of it I related to. Though my husband and I are not experiencing the same difficulties that she and her husband struggled with, I found myself recognizing a lot of the same personality traits in myself as in Mrs. Wagner. I can definitely be strong, bossy, manipulative, harsh, and judgmental in my relationship to Richard–these are sins that I am continually bringing before the Lord to ask forgiveness for and deliverance from.”
Today, we’re told everyday that biblical submission is outdated and oppressive. So, I can’t wait to see how the author ties together Paul’s words of wisdom for godly wives with a woman’s God-given ability to be “beautifully fierce!”
