Sweeter than Honey (a study for new Bible students & teachers)

June 27, 2016 By: demingglobal117 Comments

How to cultivate your appetite for Gods Word {Hive Resources}

I’ve been biting my nails, anticipating today, like it’s Christmas morning! Because today, I’m launching my new Bible study geared for new Bible students and the teachers leading them. And I have a really big, really sweet gift to give away!

the book

Sweeter than Honey: Cultivating an Appetite for the Word of God is a five-week discipleship guide based on Psalm 19 that offers first-time Bible students and their teachers hands-on cooking lessons for feasting on the Scriptures, helping them become women of the Word.

Part 1 helps women cultivate an appetite for God’s Word and the One whom the Bible is about, Christ, the Living Word.

Part 2 contains simple and practical steps for self-feeding on God’s Word despite busy schedules or the lack of a biblical ground.

A study for new Bible students & their teachers {Hive Resources}

For new Bible students

New students of the Bible will learn how to study the Bible by:

–Cultivating an appetite for God’s Word (and learning what keeps you from desiring it!)

–Reading the Bible contextually

–Interpreting passages based on what the author intended to say

–Faithfully applying the Bible’s principles (without resorting to legalism)

and most importantly…

–affirming the trustworthy nature of God’s Word

Learn to feast on the Word of God for yourself with this new study from Hive Resources

For new Bible teachers

Great books on how to study the Bible abound. But what sets Sweeter than Honey apart from the rest is it is also written for Bible study teachers and women’s ministry leaders – particularly first-time teachers or leaders who are discipling women from an unchurched background.

Discipling unchurched women looks differently from discipling women who have grown up in the church. Sweeter than Honey takes those differences into consideration and, together with the free Leader’s Guide, offers teachers a step-by-step guide for helping new believers learn how to prepare a meal from God’s Word.

A new five week guide for learning how to study the Bible {Hive Resources}

New Bible study teachers will learn how to guide other women through the Scriptures with:

–Ideas for engaging the heart of an unchurched woman

–Tips for working with groups of different sizes

–Info for hosting the material as apart of a women’s ministry event or retreat

–Tools for explaining how the Bible came to be and why it’s trustworthy

–Access to free printables and visual aids for Bible study

–A simple, reproducible method for Bible study

–A 31-Day Reading Challenge discipler and disciples can take together

Sweeter than Honey is for any woman who wants to become a woman of the Word – a woman who craves the sweetness of the Scriptures because she has tasted the sweetness of her Savior. It is my hope that this book both encourages you and equips you to nourish yourself on God’s Word each day and to invite others to his lavish table!

5 reasons the Psalms of Lament give us hope (giveaway!)

May 26, 2016 By: demingglobal129 Comments

A Heart Set Free (Review & Giveaway at Hive Resources)

Today, I’m thrilled to share a book with you that I’ve been waiting to be released for a long time!

When you friend publishes her latest book {Hive Resources}

Written by my friend Christina Fox, A Heart Set Free: A Journey to Hope Through the Psalms of Lament, is a book for weary-worn souls. It is a book for all women struggling to understand how their faith in Jesus Christ intersects with life’s difficult moments.

It reads true to Christina’s character and personal story of how a specific group of Psalms in the Scriptures helped her to overcome emotions that threatened to shipwreck her life – depession, anxiety, despair, and more.

Christina starts her book where all good stories begin – in the Garden. The entrance of sin into God’s creation corrupted all things, particularly the human heart. Because of that, A Heart Set Free, is more than a guide to cultivating healthy emotions; the book challenges readers to use biblical tools (the Psalms of Lament) to voice and identify the emotions that hold them hostage so that they might live and walk in the freedom of Christ.

5 Reasons the Psalms of Lament give us hope {A Review at Hive Resources}

WHAT IS A LAMENT?

Newer believers might be unaware that there are songs classified in the Scriptures as laments.

A lament is a type of song that honestly expresses the deepest cries of the human heart – cries of sorrow, fear, anger, anxiety, depression, suffering, pain. More than simple venting, the laments offer modern believers a guide for pouring out their hearts to God so that they might find hope in him.

Redeeming our emotions from the new book A Heart Set Free {Hive Resources}

5 REASONS THE PSALMS OF LAMENT OFFER HOPE

In the book, Christina outlines 5 reasons the Psalms of Lament offer hope in the midst of spiritual and emotional darkness.

(1) They help us express our feelings in honest and healthy ways.

(2) They help shape our feelings, helping us interpret them in light of God’s redemptive plan for the entire world.

(3) They teach us more about ourselves by revealing our greatest need and how our minds and hearts influence our lives.

(4) They teach us more about God, his character and activity in us and the world.

(5) They reorient us to the truth of the gospel and how it transforms us from the inside out.

Part of the power of Christina’s book is her own personal story of interacting with the laments, particularly in writing her own laments using the pattern and language the psalmist provides. A Heart Set Free is the vulnerable story of how Scripture is redeeming the heart of one woman and the hard work heart work is. It is a journey that I suspect will resonate with countless believers struggling with depression and anxiety.

Christina has been working on this book in both her head and heart for a while, and after seeing the finished product, I can’t recommend it heartily enough.

Fortunately, she has graciously provided a free copy for one lucky Hive Resources reader! And because the Psalms are one of my favorite books in the Bible, I thought I’d pair her book with one of my other favorite things: coffee!

To enter to win a copy of A Heart Set Free and a $15 Starbucks gift card, simply leave a comment in this blog post. That’s it! Pretty easy, right? Comments must be posted by Tuesday, May 31 at midnight! (U.S. Residents only). CONTEST HAS ENDED!

Congratulations to the winner, Gail Hein! Thank you to everyone who entered!

How to win ‘Crowned’ for your discipleship group

September 2, 2015 By: demingglobal124 Comments

Win a discipleship starter pack for your small group! {Hive Resources}

It’s here! My new book, Crowned: Created For Glory, Called By His Name, is now available on Amazon as a paperback and kindle.

To celebrate, I’m giving away a starter pack for your small group. (Update: Winner announced below!)

Here’s what it includes:

  • 6 paperback copies of Crowned
  • 6 coordinating blank notebooks
  • 1 lb of Kingdom Growers Coffee
  • and a few other fun surprises!

Enter to win the starter pack below!

About the study

Enter to win a discipleship starter pack for 6 [Hive Resources]If you’re new to the site, here’s a little about the book.

Crowned is a five-week discipleship guide that roots a woman’s identity in Christ.

Each chapter uncovers the significance of five truths of salvation (creation, redemption, justification, adoption, and sanctification) by answering two key questions: Who is God? and Who am I in Christ?

From each of these truths concerning the character and activity of God, a disciple can uncover her kingdom destiny: who she is and how she’s meant to live in a modern world.

A study for ‘unchurched’ women

Crowned is written specifically for women who are unchurched – women who don’t have a church background and lack a Christian worldview.

I believe the greatest hurdle facing women’s ministries today is the lack of discipleship strategies for reaching women who have no biblical background. We can no longer assume that the women in our neighborhoods or churches have been exposed to the gospel – or its implications for daily life!

The way we disciple women must change to reflect these growing trends in our communities. We must use simpler language. We must instruct these women first in who they are in Christ before we give them a discipleship “to-do” list. And above all, we must intentionally train them how to replicate themselves by making their own disciples.

These are lessons I learned while living and serving in an area of the U.S. with very few evangelical churches. Crowned grew out the need to minister to unchurched women attending our SBC church plant. Some had never studied the Scriptures, and others had never owned their own Bible.

Crowned is the first in a series of three discipleship books designed to instruct unchurched women in three key areas of Christian living: a biblical worldview, biblical literacy, and biblical (or missional) living. The final two books (on biblical literacy and missional living) will be released in 2016.

In the hands of a veteran discipleship leader or simply a new believer, Crowned summarizes Scripture’s basic teachings on a woman’s personal identity and purpose in life.

You are Made for More

July 9, 2014 By: demingglobal13 Comments

The Stacks - Summer Reading List to keep you grounded in God's Word {Hive Resources}

Enter to win a copy of the new book Made for More by Hannah Anderson (Hive Resources)

Hannah Anderson’s new book, Made for More: An Invitation to Live in God’s Image, is an exercise in theological application.

However, I wouldn’t give this book to a new believer. Instead, I would give it to them and then invite them to read each chapter with me. Here’s why.

In our churches, we are often guilty of leading our women only to the “pink” passages of Scriptures, the author says (think Prov. 31 woman and Titus 2). The result? Christian women lose their footing as they stumble to live up to standards of biblical womanhood. The solution? Help women discover their identity in Christ as his “image bearer.”

The concept of the imago dei (image of God) is basic enough to the biblical storyline, but fleshing it out for a woman’s walk is a monumental task that few theologians have dared to undertake … or undertaken successfully.

Made for More by Hannah Anderson {Hive Resources Review & Giveaway}Primarily because there is no one single passage that clearly outlines what women look like when they image God. Instead of focusing on passages that specifically address biblical womanhood (i.e.:  2 Tim. 2, 1 Cor 14, 1 Pet. 3 ), the author turns to the comprehensive testimony of Scripture and what God’s image means for all humanity.

Anderson centers her book on God’s character and activity as:

Love

Grace

Wisdom

A Servant

One

Sovereign

When we live as the humans God intended us to be – called “imago dei living” – we are never more like him. We become, in the author’s words, “fully human” reflecting his character and activity to a watching world for his glory.

What I liked about this book

The author frames the question of the application of the imago dei outside of the context of gender, yet still arrives at many of the same conclusions to which complementarians would agree.

And while some complementarians might quibble with Anderson’s simplistic historical descriptions of first and second-wave feminism, I believe they would affirm the central thesis of her book: biblical womanhood, above all, should start with the Savior.

The author’s clear warning of the imminent danger in choosing alternate identities. Alternate identities promise freedom and happiness, but they always end in captivity. Anderson shows how this historic myth of “superficial authenticity” – perpetuated since Eve picked up that forbidden fruit in the garden – has robbed women throughout time of the blessings of living out their true identity as an image bearer of God.

The author’s gentle nudging for women to be life-long learners. Anderson exposes the false dichotomy our culture places on equating education with a career. Whether you work inside or outside the home, God intended you to be a student. This is a welcome challenge for Western women to set aside intellectual laziness and chase knowledge, for when we do, we image God who is Wisdom personified.

The author’s correct understanding of true humanity. Humanity is not simply being born human, but rather walking in “imago dei” living. When sin corrupted the image dei within us, we became less than human. Jesus, as the human par excellence, shows us what God intended for us in creating us as human beings, and when we bear his image, we begin to become fully human once again.

The author’s ability to boil down theological truth into application – particularly as it’s fleshed out in unequally yoked marriages, sinful life patterns, and the everyday monotony of diaper changing and laundry duty. The real work of Anderson’s book, however, can be glimpsed in her rich footnotes.

Dear Mrs. Anderson, please continue to write for women who desire to know Christ first and foremost in our lives. And while you’re at it, we’d like some more of that rich footnote action in the form of some companion articles!

I’d also like to express my gratitude to Moody Publishers for being one of perhaps two Christian publishers to give voice to new evangelical female writers. In a world of theology whose voice is decidedly male, we need strong female voices who are successfully modeling how to combine critical thinking with a commitment to the authority and relevancy of the Scriptures.

Want to win a copy of this book? Moody is giving away one copy to a lucky Hive Resources reader! US Residents only. CONTEST CLOSED. Winner announced below.

My favorite Missional Motherhood tools (giveaway!)

April 27, 2014 By: demingglobal114 Comments

Ministry Monday MISSIONAL MOTHERHOOD {Hive Resources} #missionalmotherhoodIn honor of Mother’s Day, I’m giving away some of my favorite things that are helping me embrace the call to missional motherhood.

In this giveaway, you won’t find the typical missions tools – maps, printables on peoplegroups, etc. Instead, you will find some solid resources to help you orient your heart toward the mission God has given you as a mother.

Treasuring Christ when Your Hands are Full

Treasuring Christ by Gloria Furman {giveaway at Hive Resources}

Treasuring Christ When Your Hands Are Full: Gospel Meditations for Busy Moms is a small book that packs a powerful punch. I need to read this book once a day.

If you’re struggling to find joy in the seeming unending tasks of motherhood, this book is for you. In it, author Gloria Furman helps moms recapture the significance of motherhood – not solely in the activity of mothering – but as an “invitation to worship” the One who created motherhood for himself.

In her reassuring writing style, Fuman walks the reader through the varied and deep implications of the cross for mothering – how grace shapes our view of the mundane and helps us fix our eyes on eternity.

Here’s my favorite quote from the book:

The highest aim of womanhood is being conformed to the image of Christ says author Gloria Furman {Hive Resources}

 True Beauty

Enter to win a copy of True Beauty by Carolyn Mahaney at Hive Resources #missionalmotherhoodMore than anything, the changes and demands of motherhood have reshaped how I view beauty both in myself and others. Because my budget and schedule allocate very little to primping & preening, I thought I’d surpassed the beauty obsession long ago.

But True Beauty by Carolyn Mahaney and Nicole Whitacre revealed to me how deeply embedded my desire to be lovely has impacted my daily walk…and it wasn’t very pretty.

In this book, you won’t find any guilt trips or lectures. Nor will you find any set rules for hemlines or definitions for modesty. You will find a celebration of the truly Beautiful One who created beauty and calls us to delight and walk in His beauty.

You’ll find answers for how redemption changes our need for self-glory (our heart) an our taste in beauty (our behavior).  Every mother should read this book, because it will help her view beauty in is proper Christ-glorying perspective. For mothers of daughters, I can think of no better Mother’s Day present to help in combating the world’s-obsession with self.

Here’s my favorite quote from the book:

A book to help you see and experience true beauty {Hive Resources}

Cup of Hope Coffee

Cup of Hope #Coffee company - Entertaining with purpose {Once a Month #Hospitality at Hive Resources}

My coffee drinking habit has historic roots. Some of my most precious memories involve sipping on steaming cups of joe while visiting family or catching up with sweet friends over lattes.

So, when I found Cup of Hope Coffee, I was able to marry two of my favorite things: coffee and missions.

Founded by a former international missionary to the Himalayas, Cup of Hope Coffee gives 15% of their gross revenues to international missions.

They also partner to plant new churches in hard and unreached areas of the world, while fighting poverty by facilitating partnerships fair trade local farmers, offering leadership and entrepreneurial development tools, and more.

As if motherhood didn’t already generate a need to drink coffee, I now have a legitimate excuse to drink more!

Want to win a set of all these missional motherhood resources? Crossway Books is giving away 2 sets of True Beauty and Treasuring Christ to 2 lucky Hive Resources Readers. And because I love ya, I’m throwing in a pound of Cup of Hope beans for each winner!

Easter Story Eggs (Giveaway)

March 19, 2014 By: demingglobal130 Comments

Easter Week at Hive Resources #Easter #Resurrection #HeisRisen

Hands down, Easter is my favorite holiday.

Even more than Christmas, Easter is a time to praise our King for new life. At Christmas we celebrate the One who came to save us from our sin. But at Easter, we celebrate the One who rose again so we might be fully restored to the King’s kingdom. We need more than to be forgiven of sin; we need to be fully remade in his image. And in Christ’s resurrection, we’re given hope for what we may one day look like.

While we live in light of the resurrection every day of the year, this Easter, I hope you’ll set aside some special time as a family to celebrate the fact that Christ is Risen!  Here’s a tool to help you do so:

Star a family Easter tradition with these adorable Easter Story Eggs {Hive Resources}

The Easter Story Eggs

Last year, I had the exciting opportunity to reflect on the resurrection by contributing a chapter to an Easter devotional produced Family Treeditions – a group helping you root your family in the love and knowledge of God.

The Easter Story Eggs walk you through the Easter story. There are 12 eggs ornaments that coincide with 12 devotions – each centering on a name, character attribute, or activity of our Savior all leading up to his resurrection.

12 Days of Easter with the Easter Story Eggs & Devotional {Hive Resources}

On the front of each ornament is Christ’s title or character attribute; on the back is a matching symbol (great for pre-readers!) Last year, we added an ornament each day until we reached Easter Sunday. This year, I had a little help adding all the ornaments at once.

Hurry over to enter to win a set of Easter Story Eggs & Devotional at Hive Resources

The tree, purchased separately, is one of my favorite Treeditions products. I have used it year around for many different events – Christmas advent decorations, baby showers, valentine love notes, etc. The white tree stands at 48” and the branches bend making it easy to decorate and then store away when it’s not in use. It is also available in iron!

Easter Story Eggs Giveaway just in time for Easter {Hive Resources}

I contributed a devotional on the innocence of Christ taken from John 18:29-38 and Isaiah 53, sharing a story from our recent trip to Ohio’s Canfield Fair where we watched a sheep shearing contest.  Along with a selected Bible passage, each devotional includes discussion questions for your family and a special prayer to direct your heart toward our risen King.

This Easter devotional for the whole family follows the names of Christ {Hive Resources}

The Easter Story Eggs have proven to be a wonderful tool for our family to celebrate the resurrection. I know your family will enjoy it, too!

Want to win a set of the Egg Ornaments and the Easter Story Egg devotional? Treeditions is giving away 1 set to a lucky Hive Resources reader. Enter below! Contest IS OVER! Winner announced below!

Bind your child’s heart to God using an illustrated Bible memory system (giveaway!)

January 30, 2014 By: demingglobal131 Comments

Hi! Welcome to Hive Resources. This post is part of a series – Tools to Keep your Family Rooted in Love.  Subscribe today so you don’t miss the goodies in this series!

An illustrated Bible memory system to bind your child's heart to God {Hive Resources}

My mother sketched out Psalm 1 and Ephesians 6 by hand on an over-sized notepad. At dinner, we would repeat the passages using her illustrations as a guide. To this day, her drawing of a gleaming Roman helmet comes to mind when I read Paul’s admonition for believers to put on the full armor of God.

Illustrations aid in memory. My mother knew that and found a way to help her family understand and apply God’s Word using pictures.

Today, I am excited to share with you a tool by Heart Binders Innovations that will not only help your family remember what God’s Word says but what it means and how it applies to everyday life – all through illustrations. Plus, there’s an amazing giveaway at the end of this post! GIVEAWAY CLOSED. Winners announced below.

Enter to win a Scripture Memory System of Psalm 91 worth $70 {enter at Hive Resources}

An Illustrated Bible Memory System

Vicki Palaganas is the founder and artist at Heart Binders. She creates illustrated Bible memory systems that dig deep into Scripture.

Currently, she offers complete curriculum sets for Psalm 91, a Proverbs series based on the self-confident fool, and the Christmas story from Luke 2:1-21.

Each system includes hand-drawn pictures of each verse to help children visualize the Scripture.

We tried out the Ps. 91 system and I was blown away by how well my five-year-old boys retained and understood this iconic passage.

The first day we read through some of the cards, they understood and repeated words like ‘pestilence!’ And while they sometimes ask me to help them with the first word in a verse, I am amazed how much they can remember from the pictures alone.

Here’s my son, Zach, saying Ps. 91:1-13.

When they are fearful at night from bad dreams, we now have common ground from which to discuss God’s protection. They can now picture themselves nestling under his feathers. They can visualize God standing over them like a stone fortress, and they know God is victorious over the serpent and the fowler.

That’s big truth and big comfort for little ones! That’s what God’s Word does when we internalize it. The Spirit causes it to increase our faith!

Why I love Heart Binders

Each curriculum is an entire memory system. This system is a homeschooling household’s dream! The Psalm 91 passage came with illustrations for all 16 verses, a study guide, an e-book including tests, a guided teaching CD, a workbook, flashcards, and a storybook. Because my boys aren’t reading yet, we simply used the flashcards. But for readers, there is no end to the ways this system allows you to reinforce the truth they are learning.

The Psalm 91 Memory System for ages four and up {Hive Resources}

The system digs into Hebrew and Greek. Fellow word nerds rejoice! This was my favorite part of the Heart Binders system. Vicki provides definitions and explanations for almost every Hebrew word in Ps. 91. In fact, the workbook includes space for children to write out the Hebrew and its meaning for each verse.

It was such a joy to sit down and talk about the meaning of the names of God (Almighty and Most High) with the boys, and it was even more thrilling for them to find out what some of the military terms meant like “snare of the fowler” and “buckler.” What a big view of God they both have because of this material!

The Proverbs illustrated Series the Self Confident Fool {Hive Resources}

I can’t wait to start her Proverbs series next, which includes 41 different Scriptures on wise and foolish behavior, highlighting five different types of fools we are warned against. After the boys finish this system, they will have been introduced to 150 new vocabulary words!

How to help your child memorize the entire Christmas story in Luke {Hive Resources}

Her most recent system, the Christmas Story, was designed for families and groups, such as Christian schools or churches. Can you imagine a Christmas play using all Scripture? What a blessing to both the students and audience!

Want to win a system? Vicki is generously providing an entire memory system of Psalm 91 to 3 lucky Hive Resources readers! That’s a $70 value! Please enter to win below. (Open to US residents only. Contest ends Feb. 6 at midnight!) GIVEAWAY CLOSED. The winners are announced below. You each have 24 hours to contact me with your address before another winner is chosen. Info {at} hiveresources {dot} com.

Thank you for entering! I love Vicki’s heart and passion for God’s Word. Would you help grow her ministry by sharing this post on Facebook or pinning it to Pinterest?

Find out more about Heart Binders by visiting them online or their Facebook page. Special thanks to Heart Binders for providing me with a copy of her material to preview. I’m linking up with Thought-Provoking Thursday and Faith-filled Friday!

The Stacks: Found in Him by Elyse Fitzpatrick (Giveaway Winners!)

November 28, 2013 By: demingglobal129 Comments

I’m excited to start a new series today called The Stacks: Must Have Books of the Season. In this series, you’ll find reviews of some of my new favorite books, giveaways, & Christmas gift ideas for the book lover in your life!

The Stacks: Must have books of the season {Hive Resources}

With Christmas around the corner, there is no better book to dig into than Elyse Fitzpatrick’s new book, Found in Him: The Joy of the Incarnation and Our Union with Christ.

Because whatever you think you know about the Christmas story or God putting on flesh, you probably haven’t grasped its full meaning. In her book, Elyse manages to untangle the theological richness of the incarnation in the plainest of terms, all with the goal to help you understand the daily joy, peace, and comfort that comes from the single truth of a baby being born in a manager.

Enter to win 1 of 2 copies of Found in Him by Elyse Fitzpatrick {Hive Resources}

In it she answers questions that often plague us as we encounter the mysterious mechanics of the Son becoming a man. Questions like:

  • If Jesus was the covenant of grace, why did he need to be circumcised? (Luke 1:35)
  • How could Jesus, who never ceased to be fully God, grow or “increase” in obedience as Scripture says? (Luke 2:52; Heb. 5:8)
  • When Scripture says Jesus was “made perfect” through his sufferings, does it imply there was a time when he was imperfect? (Heb. 2:10)
  • What does it mean when Scripture says Jesus “became sin” for us? (2 Cor. 5:21)

To help you understand all this, Elyse divides her book into two sections.

Part 1 deals with the miracle of the incarnation and his union with us.

Part 2 deals with the benefits of the incarnation and our union with him.

Here are some of the wonderful applications from both sections:

  1. Because of the incarnation, we are not alone. The Son volunteered to be like us by uniting with us in a common nature.
  2. Because of the incarnation, we have great hope. The Son became a new kind of human who is free of sin and formed a new kind of race. As this “new Adam,” he has crushed our foe, Satan.
  3. Because of the incarnation, we are united with God. The Son fulfilled the greatest longing of our soul when he became a man: to be united to him once again.

Beyond the story of the incarnation event, Elyse draws out other truths such as the significance of Jesus’ ascension as a part of his incarnational ministry.

As the Ascended King, Elyse writes: “He has so become one of with us that he has taken our flesh into the throne room of God, where it had never been before, and he has exalted our humble estate by bringing us along with him into the very presence of God.”

This Christmas, I will not only marvel at the truth of the incarnation, but I will also be overcome and humbled by it.

“He has been and will be forever found with us so that we may forever be found with him.”
